Homeschooling Regulations By State

Homeschooling Regulations By State Homeschooling has been legal throughout the United States for about 25 years, but regulations vary dramatically by state. Only two states require background checks for parents who choose to homeschool, and just ten require parents to have a high school degree. Fewer than half require any kind of evaluation or testing of homeschooled children.

Homeschooling Regulations By State Home education is legal in all 50 U.S. states. Check out your state’s regulations using the alphabetical list below (or Google “homeschooling” “regulations” “your state” for more links). We encourage you to observe all state regulations, even if you think they’re unreasonable; they have been passed as an attempt to protect families and children. If you dislike your state laws, take advantage of the democratic process: write your senator, lobby your local school board, and vote.

Homeschooling Methods

Charlotte Mason The Charlotte Mason method is based on Charlotte’s firm belief that the child is a person and we must educate that whole person, not just his mind. So a Charlotte Mason education is three-pronged: in her words, “Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life.”

Montessori Method The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr. Montessori’s Method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world. It is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive.

Waldorf Education Waldorf Education is independent and inclusive. It upholds the principles of freedom in education and engages independent administration locally, continentally and internationally. It is regionally appropriate education with hundreds of schools worldwide today. Waldorf Education is truly Inspired Learning.

Classical Education Classical education is like a very large museum with many beautiful, wonder-filled rooms that could be studied over a lifetime. It is a long tradition of education that has emphasized the seeking after of truth, goodness, and beauty and the study of the liberal arts and the great books. What are the liberal arts? They are grammar, logic, rhetoric (the verbal arts of the trivium), arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy (the mathematical arts of the quadrivium). This approach to education also includes the study of Latin. It is precisely this kind of education that has produced countless great leaders, inventors, scientists, writers, philosophers, theologians, physicians, lawyers, artists, and musicians over the centuries.

Principle Approach The Principle Approach has been called “reflective teaching and learning.” It is America’s historic method of Biblical reasoning which places the Truths (or principles) of God’s Word at the heart of education. Each subject is predicated upon God’s Biblical principles and students are taught to think and reason from principles and leading ideas using The Notebook Method to Research, Reason, Relate and Record. The Principle Approach was rediscovered and restored to twentieth century American Christian education by the Foundation for American Christian Education (FACE) co-founder, Rosalie Slater, who identified seven principles of American Christian history and government in her foundational book, Teaching and Learning America’s Christian History: The Principle Approach.

Unit Studies A “unit study” integrates disciplines together, rather than dividing them into separate “subjects” to be pursued at different times during the school day. Literature, history, science, mathematics, art, music, history, and so on are all studied through their relationship to a core organizing principle. For example, the Konos character curriculum uses character qualities such as Obedience, Attentiveness, and Trust; history, literature, nature studies, science, and other subjects are then studied as they relate to the central character quality of the unit. Five in Row uses children’s literature classics as the organizing principle of their unit study; Learning Adventures uses chronological history. I have seen unit studies done on turtles, Little House on the Prairie, ancient Rome, pyramids, trains, and bread-making.

Unschooling Unschooling is an educational method and philosophy that advocates learner-chosen activities as a primary means for learning. Unschooling students learnthrough their natural life experiences including play, household responsibilities, personal interests and curiosity, internships and work experience, travel, books, elective classes, family, mentors, and social interaction. Unschooling encourages exploration of activities initiated by the children themselves, believing that the more personal learning is, the more meaningful, well-understood and therefore useful it is to the child. While courses may occasionally be taken, unschooling questions the usefulness of standard curricula, conventional grading methods, and other features of traditional schooling in the education of each unique child.

Delayed Academics Many experienced homeschoolers have long valued the ability to delay formal academics to create a more holistic early childhood education for their young children, with the understanding that this creates a rich foundation for later academic and life success.

Our coalition of three organizations positively impacts the lives of more than 100,000 homeschooling families in Texas. Davidson Gifted Hand in Hand Education (Maryland) Mid-Atlantic Hand In Hand Education believes that no one educational model will meet the needs of all children. Instead, we believe parents have the right to objective and quality information so they can make informed choices along their children’s educational journey. We support the freedom of choice for finding the right fit between a child’s learning needs and the family’s ability to meet those needs. Hand in Hand is an inclusive organization that honors each family’s ethnic background, religion, orientation, and educational philosophy. We strive to work with community partners to solve education-related issues through respectful communication.

The Homeschool Association of California (HSC) The Homeschool Association of California is a nonprofit organization (501(c)(3)) that has been around since 1987 when a small group of Bay Area homeschooling moms got together to start what was then called the Northern California Homeschool Association. Since then we’ve grown to a statewide organization. Those original families have moved on to new life stages and passed their vision on to new members, that vision being an inclusive homeschooling organization dedicated to the support of homeschooling families in all their many flavors. We hold to the belief that homeschooling families are the ones best able to make their own educational choices. We are a non-profit volunteer organization.
